What Happened To France, Euro 2016 Finals
So the Euro 2016 Finals are over, and I'm sure many of us watched it expecting France to dominate.
But that was not the case, So what happened?
Here are some reasons I think helped produce an unexpected Euro Champion
- Lack Of Rest - The French team had their semi-final match much closer to the final fixture than Portugal, because of this, as Deschamps(French Coach) has confirmed, They had to focus entirely on recovery, and did not have much time for tactics.
- Pressure - The French, being hosts of tournament, had a lot of pressure on them to win the finals. Other than that players like Griezmann, Payet, and Pogba were expected to perform extremely well which could have led to them crumbling, or in the case of Payet, to take all the pressure on himself and try to lead his team to victory on his own. Griezmann missed chances which nobody expected him to miss, and Pogba seemed frustrated that his team could not score, which was reflected in his tackles.
- Overconfidence - The French team was, before the final, undeniably the favorites for winning the game, after defeating the World Champions Germany 2-0. This could have reflected in their mentality while playing the game. Players might have thought that the game was already won, even though Griezmann did say that Portugal were a tough opponent and they would have to play their best. Maybe all of them did not think the same way. Portugal On the other hand were the underdogs, and with Ronaldo's attitude, they looked very fierce and determined, even when France were getting chance after chance.
But anyways, France still played an incredible tournament, and produced lots of great individual performances. Payet and Griezmann have done their best and even though they could not conjure up a win for their country, I am sure that France will hold nothing against them.
